Building a Mini Pi5 Cyberdeck Running Kali Linux
For this cyberdeck build I am using a NOS (New Old Stock) enclosure from 1953 (Suckle Electronics. made for the U.S. Army Signal Corp to hold spare parts)
The panels that hold the HDMI and keyboard is made from FR4 circuit boards.
It's a pretty standard build, but the vintage enclosure adds quite a bit of flair :)
Inside, there is a 8 Gb Raspberry Pi 5, a Pimorini NVMe base (that holds a 500Gb NVMe SSD). I'm using an actively cooled aluminium heatsink on the Pi, but I have also added a secondary 30mm fan for venting the metal enclosure.
The monitor is a standard 7" USB powered HDMI screen.
The dimensions are 26 x 12 x 7 cm.
I bought some chinese panel mount extensions for ethernet, USB A and p...

Custom Robot Transport Case (using Shadowfoam)

I was lucky enough to be able to get hold of some vintage (probably 50s ?) and really cool looking metal carrying cases at an online auction a couple of months ago. I'm not 100% sure what their original purpose was, but I'm guessing they were used for carrying some form of breathing equipment. Since I'm currently building a couple of3D printed hexapod robots that I am planning to display at our...
Hexapod Robot Kinematics - part 5 (massive update and demo)

My hexapod simulator is slowly evolving into something more like hexapod design studio. It now supports an arbitary number of legs and three different gait patterns. The legs no longer have to be anchored symmetrically around the robot body, but can have individual offsets and orientation. The length of the coxa, femur and tibia segments can now vary between legs, enabling more interesting crea...

Spar 7 Rebuild using ESP32S3 Part 2/2

This is the second and final episode of my Spar 7 rebuild. The previous video focused mainly on the schematic and PCB. In this episode I will take a look at the firmware, design and rebuild a new hopper from scratch (3D printed and designed in Fusion 360). The ESP32S3 is a powerful little microcontroller. The firmware is based on FreeRTOS. In addition to the game logic, I have implemented a sim...

My Original Odhner pinwheel calculator was a dumpster find some 40ish years ago. It was covered in some form of sticky residue, so it had to be cleaned up. The entire droid is printed on a 400x400x400 RatRig VCore 3d printer with a 0.6mm nozzle, using 0.2mm layer height. I used UV resin to get rid of any layer lines, The base coat colour is "Sahara Beige" (Montana Gold). Weathering was done using watered down acrylics.

    • @TimeExpander

The inspiration for this project was just the idea of having a set of “robot eyes” trying to make eye contact with you. I already had the Jetson from a previous project, so I decided to use that, but you could most likely get away with using OpenCV to do face detection. My inspiration for the eye mechanism was the eye mech designed by @WillCogley. Since I was using different servos and also wanted individual eyelid control, I had to do the design from scratch in Fusion (he only provided STL files, which are notoriously hard to convert to solid models for modification). I really just wanted to satisfy my own curiosity with this project and didn’t have any commercial aspirations, so the masks/faces are now hanging on the wall in the man cave. It was a really fun build, and it also gave me an opportunity to play around with mold making and rotocasting teqniques, using the excellent materials sold by @smoothon

    Really that's like a $400 head, a jetson really, wow, a pi4 is like $70

    • @TimeExpander
      @TimeExpander 2 месяца назад

I already had most of the electronics from previous projects, so the financial "investment" in these heads was really only the batch of silicone, monster clay and resin. The Jetson was probably overkill, but it was a fun project and it gave me an excuse to play with machine learning (You could in all likelyhood get away with using a pi + opencv for doing the same thing.)

The error was driving me crazy. This was a brand new camera and the error didn't occur until I had used it for a couple of weeks. If it was firmware related, it should have acting up since day one and also been more consistent. I decided to peek inside the SD card slot and noticed the mechanical microswitch inside. That got me thinking and I decided to test with a piece of tape to force the switch in case it was a mechanical issue.
